Animal Description:

One of the easiest anemones to care for, the Pink Tip Anemone can be a good choice for a beginner. These beautiful anemones have interesting coloring with contrasting tips, but are not often hosts for Clown Fish.

Although Pink Tip Anemones are sometimes found alone, many are also found in loosely associated groups. In a home aquarium, Pink Tip Anemones may move about an aquarium. This can be unfortunate, if other corals or anemones are present, as they could be harmed by its stinging tentacles. Pink Tip Anemones are generally quite hardy provided water quality is good. Pink Tip Anemones can be fed once in a while. A small chunk of fish, shrimp, squid, etc., is dangled from some implement into the anemone's tentacles. An ideal set up for a Pink Tip Anemone would include strong lighting and a moderate current.

The Pink Tip Anemone has relatively thick white or tan tentacles of moderate length. The tips of these are often a bright pink color, though some specimens have tips that are very light pink or similar in color to the rest of the tentacle. The base of the anemone is white or tan. The specimens found near Haiti often have orange or red bases and appear to be somewhat more hardy.

Found in the western Atlantic, the Pink Tip Anemone is also known as the Haitian Anemone, or Haitian Condylactis. These anemones are quite popular, due to their relative hardiness and generally low cost. For at least the western hemisphere these are the most common anemones found in the pet trade.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Relatively Easy

Bright lighting is important for Pink Tip Anemones. They cannot survive long without good lighting. The Pink Tip Anemone will normally do well in temperatures between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 26 degrees Celsius). The pH value should be 8.3 or 8.4, and the specific gravity should be at least 1.023. A moderate current is generally acceptable to Pink Tip Anemones. Various supplements like iodine and trace elements should be regularly replenished. Good substrates include live rock or sand, into which the Pink Tip Anemone can burrow to anchor it's foot. Pink Tip Anemones may be kept with caution in a reef environment as they may damage other invertebrates should they wander. Live rock and non-aggressive crustaceans are ideal in a tank set up. Red Leg Hermit Crabs have been reported to prey on Pink Tip Anemones. Pink Tip Anemones are rarely used as hosts for Clown Fish. Chopped fish, shrimp, or mussels are the most common foods offered to Pink Tip Anemones but it may not be necessary to feed them at all. If your anemone is gradually decreasing in size it may require feeding as this indicates that it is not getting enough nutrition from it's environment.
