Animal Description:

Aptly named, the Mozambique Hissing Scorpion is known for its ability to hiss!

The Mozambique Hissing Scorpion is an aggressive scorpion and will not hesitate to sting or pinch. There are no documented reports of deaths from its venom and therefore it is considered to be non-deadly, but its bite is painful. The venom is said to equal that of a Hornet sting and swelling and pain is expected at the site of the sting for up to 24 hours.

A large scorpion, the Yellow Legged Burrowing scorpion is widely available in the pet trade and is often confused with other species of the same genus, due to the wide selection of color morphs, ecristatus and boehmi being the most often confused species.

This species is not often recommended as a pet; due to it's highly aggressive nature and therefore should be kept out of reach of children and left untouched.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

The Mozambique Hissing Scorpion should be kept on 4-6 inches of dried and packed peat moss with flat stone in which to burrow under. This scorpion species averages 4-4.5 inches in length for adult females, males being slightly smaller. Young scorpions should eat pinhead crickets. Adults should eat medium sized insects no larger than the scorpion's cauda (tail) length. They should be fed a variety of inset types. Light misting is required as well as a shallow water dish. Humidity should be kept at 60% while temperature should remain between 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Relatively Difficult

Breeding of the Mozambique Hissing Scorpion scorpion is considered relatively difficult because this species is aggressive in nature and often will fight within captivity. Breeding should only be attempted by more knowledgeable scorpion enthusiasts and professionals to prevent cannibalism in the species.
