The Mexican Red Rump Tarantula is native to Mexico, but ranges to Central America as well. It is smaller then many other Mexican Tarantulas and is also slightly more aggressive. They are beautiful animals. Not generally considered a docile species, the Mexican Red Rump can seem quite calm and then become aggressive very quickly. It should be noted that while this species is classified as relatively aggressive they are often able to be handled, but have a potential for aggression. This is in stark contrast so some other species, such as the Usambara, which will often go out of its way to bite. They are fairly slow moving and so cannot strike quickly, but they do kick hairs. They prefer slightly more humid conditions than many other Mexican species - about 60-70%. The Mexican Red Rump is a very active burrower, although it does like to have a shelter provided to burrow into. A very attractive animal, the Mexican Red Rump Tarantula derives its name from the carapace, which is fringed with pale orange. The rest of the body is primarily black, with a lot of long red hairs on the abdomen and legs. There are color variations; some Mexican Red Rumps are primarily brown with no hairs darker then pale orange. They are smaller than other Mexican Tarantulas, with a leg span of about 13cm, or 3 inches. They grow very quickly, and most likely live for up to 15 years. |
