Animal Description: Breed Standard

The Bohemia Rex is the result of a naturally occurring mutation. Combining the long lush hair of a Persian with the striking curly locks of the Rex, the Bohemia Rex is a uniquely distinguished cat.

The Bohemia Rex possesses the sweet loving personality traditional in the Persian cat community. The Bohemia Rex is a serene, docile affectionate cat.

The Bohemia Rex also known as the 'Curly Persian' or Tsjechian Curly Cat' is a medium to large sized cat. His muscular, round body is cobby, with short, strong legs that end in large round paws that usually contain tufts of hair between the toes. He has a massive back and shoulders with a wide chest. His neck, like the rest of his body is short and strong. The Bohemia Rex has a handsome face defined by full cheeks, a rounded forehead, and a broad short nose, while not a snub nose it does possess a definite stop. He has a strong chin with broad and powerful jaws. His nice open expression is enhanced by a set of large, round, open eyes that are set widely. The expressive eyes of the Bohemia Rex are brilliant and are accepted in several hues. Atop his handsome head lie two small rounded ears surrounded by tufts of hair. They are wide set and lie rather low to this head. The tail of the Bohemia Rex is relatively short, but it is proportional to the rest of his body. It is bushy with a slightly rounded tip. The coat of the Bohemia Rex is what makes it so striking. His wavy coat is seen ranging from medium-long to long. It is a thick dense coat with an even longer hair seen in the ruff, posterior leg regions. With the exception of the short hair seen on the ears and face, the hair of the Bohemia Rex is curly. Beautiful spiral curls can be seen on the flanks, chest, rear legs and abdomen. Several shades are acceptable for this breed. Straight hair is not accepted in shows.

The Bohemia Rex was first discovered in 1981 when at least one curly haired kitten was produced in a normal Persian litter. This unusual litter was produced in Liberec, in the Czech Republic. The progeny of this pairing were the foundation for this remarkable breed. It was discovered later that this was not the first appearance of curly haired kittens from the pairing of two pedigree Persian cats. This remarkable mutation can be traced back to a pair of Blue Persian males. Some theorize that the mutation is the result of using Persians being used in German Rex out-crossing programs. The actual origin of this unusual curly gene may remain a mystery, but the breed is increasing in popularity, though not at the rate the Selkirk Rex has. This may be due do the fact that the gene which causes the Bohemia Rex's curls is recessive.
