Animal Description: Breed Standard

The Burmilla originated in 1981, when a female Lilac Burmese was crossed with a silver Chinchilla Persian. The traditional coat patterns of these two breeds come from the opposite ends of the color chart and the result - the ever so dramatic appearance of the Burmilla! It's been said that the Burmilla's esthetic black "eyeliner" markings are the result of the presence of the silver gene. The newly formed "look" caused so much fuss, that similar matings were carried out in the United Kingdom to form the Burmilla breed.

An ideal companion for a household with children and other pets, the Burmilla delights in getting involved in their dwelling's daily activities. The Burmilla is so outgoing that it has been known to meet and greet strangers by pouncing onto their laps. They have much to chat about, so engaging conversation should be anticipated. They are curious, intelligent, and adventure-seekers. Coupled with the Burmilla's playful enthusiasm is their sweet, gentle, and good-natured temperament. They delight in seeking warmth and affection while cuddling on your lap.

The Burmilla's big, bright eyes are accented by a dramatic black-colored outline that creates an exotic effect. Their eyes come in all shades of green with clear green being preferred. The shape of the Burmilla's eyelid curves to form an angle at the bridge of its red brick nose. Those distinctive black markings also appear around their nose and lips. Their straight noses are set on a head that is slightly rounded at the top. The Burmilla has wide-based, forward-angled ears that range from medium to long. They have a deep chin, strong neck, and develop wider cheeks when they mature. The Burmilla's back legs are slightly longer than their front legs and their paws are oval shaped. Their tail is a bit pointed at the tip, medium to long, and rests on a base that is slightly thicker.

Sleek and medium-sized, weighing between eight and ten pounds, the Burmilla proudly flaunts a well-developed bone structure and strong muscular development. Yet another of the Burmilla's distinctive and striking features is that it appears to be wrapped in a cloak with a silver glint. Their coat is silky, dense, and shorthaired with a sufficient undercoat. It's their pure silver or white coats, with variances of shadings and tippings in a range of accepted colors, that renders them with a magical appearance.
