Animal Description: Breed Standard

The Colorpoint Shorthair is native to England. This unique breed was originally developed by crossing Siamese with American Shorthairs, Abyssinians, and other shorthairs during the latter part of the 1940's.

The Colorpoint Shorthair thrives on attention. If you are not responsive, the Colorpoint Shorthair will evoke your attention with its strong voice. Known for being extremely vocal, they'll start conversations, interject their views and argue a point to the end. Humans and cats alike should expect to be entertained by this playful feline's repertoire of creative stunts. Quite unpredictable by nature, you can be sure that the Colorpoint Shorthair requires loads of time to play. Getting involved with every aspect of the household's activities is one of their favorite ways to spend time. Confidence and intelligence are key characteristics of this exotic breed. But beneath all the fuss, lies a temperament that is warm and loving. The Colorpoint Shorthairs have an earnest desire to feel that they rightfully belong and are in turn, loved. They strongly bond with each member of the household including adults, children, and every other pet. Terribly sensitive and compassionate, the Colorpoint Shorthairs become friends for life. Rest assured they are big cuddlers and are likely to snuggle under the warmth of blankets with their dutiful owners.

The Colorpoint Shorthair is accepted in an array of fabulous coat colors, well beyond that of the Siamese. The Colorpoint Shorthair in no way resembles the American Shorthair, but retains the sleek styling of the Siamese. Some have counted up to sixteen available coat colors - hence the appropriate name given for registration purposes. Solid or patterned in a broad palette of colors, the Colorpoint Shorthair's coat is short, fine and of high gloss. They parade in point colors that surpass the Siamese. Reds and creams as well as torties in seal and chocolate plus blue or lilac - even lynx patterns are the coats that can be found on their elongated bodies. Of medium size, weighing in at seven to nine pounds, the Colorpoint Shorthair's profile evokes an air of distinction. Its long nose is set off by a pair of medium-sized vivid blue eyes that are the shape of almonds. Their attentive nature is of course completed by large, pointed ears that are poised in a state of awareness at every moment. A medium-sized head upholds the grace of its stature, while a long and dramatically tapered; thin tail reminds you of its natural state of being an amusing companion.

The Colorpoint Shorthair is also referred to as the Colorpoint, Colourpoint, and the New Color Siamese.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

Periodic bathing is recommended to retain the striking appearance of the Colorpoint Shorthair's glossy coat. Use the concave side of a rubber brush to smooth out the fluffy hairs, after the coat has dried. Regular grooming is a treat your feline will revel in. Routine, preferably weekly nail clipping is important and easy with this tolerant breed. Be sure to discuss your feline's specific needs with the breeder to ensure the health and wellness of your life-long friend.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Relatively Difficult

There are a variety of clubs that focus on protecting, promoting, and preserving the Colorpoint Shorthair breed. A note of caution, regarding inherent health defects within the breed. Colorpoints may be cross eyed, display a slight but rapid back and forth eye movement - referred to as nystagmus, or have congenital heart defects. These genetic health problems are similar to those of the Siamese breed. They must be taken in as serious issues for those who wish to propagate the Colorpoint Shorthair breed.
