Animal Description: Breed Standard

The Russian Black is an ebony beauty that is breathtaking to behold. His striking, plush coat gives him beauty in addition to the intelligence he was naturally gifted with. Those who think that brains and beauty never meet have not spent time with the Russian Black.

In most respects, the Russian black has the same characteristics as the more commonly known Russian Blue. What distinguishes this cat is his striking black coat; in all other ways he is like the Russian Blue. Most organizations do not recognize the Russian Black as a distinct breed, but since some maintain it is a separate breed type we will treat it as such here.

Like the Russian Blue, the Russian Black is an intelligent, soft-spoken creature. The Russian Black is known to get along with most children and household pets. The Russian Black is an athletic cat with extreme intelligence. They have been known to fetch toys and open doors, inviting themselves into every room of the house. In spite of their often, playful nature they are a quiet, unassuming breed. "Look before you leap" is the motto of this cat. Because of their great intelligence, the Russian Black is very sensitive to the moods of their owners and will often work hard to cheer up a sad member of their family. They are also known for their cleanliness, often described by some as 'fastidious' in nature. Even though the Russian Black is shy, this does not prevent him from developing close emotional ties to his owners. They are deeply affectionate to those they love, and show great devotion. The Russian Black is not a demanding breed and is quite content to entertain himself when you are unable to be with him in the daytime. The Russian Black can be very entertaining.

A stunning breed, the Russian Black is most prized for his soft, luxurious coat and brilliant emerald eyes. His coat is lustrous, plush and dense, making it extremely tempting to pet him for hours and hours on end. The thickness of this coat is so extreme that it lies away from his body, standing out to such a degree that you can trace patterns in it with your finger. These patterns will stay until you smooth his coat out for him. The head of the Russian Black is broad and wedge shaped. The Russian Black is a medium sized cat, ranging from six to eight pounds. His rounded vivid green eyes are large and wide set. His profile is relatively flat. This feline has been described by some as always carrying a smile. His smiling appearance is caused by prominent whisker pads. His body is firmly muscled, but maintains much grace, as he is finely boned. His graceful carriage and clean lines add to the already regal appearance of this stunning breed.
