Animal Description: Breed Standard

The European Chartreux is a massive version of the already robust North American Chartreux.

The size difference between the European and North American Chartreux is seen in several areas. Perhaps the most noticeable is the overall larger size of both the male and female European Chartreux. Their increased size is noticeable even down to their paws. The paws of the European are significantly larger than those of their North American counterparts. In both cases their paws a relatively small and dainty compared to their generous bodies. Another difference between the paws of these cats is color. The North American Chartreux has rose taupe paws while those of the European are more of a blue gray. Another common difference between these two Chartreux breeds is the shape of the eyes. The European Chartreux has a much more noticeable slant. Both breeds, however, have beautiful, open, round eyes. The European Chartreux possesses puffy whisker pads, much more pronounced than those seen in the North American. Their ears are wide set, more so than those seen on the North American Chartreux.

It has been suggested that breeding programs should be encouraged to combine the European with the North American to enhance the genetic diversity of this wonderful breed. In addition the broadening the gene pool the results could produce wonderful results.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

The European Chartreux does not require much special care. Because their coat is short it does not require the maintenance of some of the long hair breeds. Regular brushing is required during shedding season.

Some European Chartreux may be prone to obesity so it is important to monitor their diets. They may also be prone to gingivitis, so regular dental care is a must.
