The Sloughi, also known as the Arabian Greyhound, is a fairly tall yet lean breed that was originally used for hunting and herding but is now more common as a companion. A one-man dog, the Sloughi tends to bond well with one person and be reserved towards all others. They are, however, quite affectionate with their owners. The Sloughi has a reputation as a good family dog that does well in homes with children. Some Sloughis can be aggressive towards strangers. They are athletic dogs that need lots of room to exercise and run. They should not be kept in urban settings, not only because they require a great deal of space but also because they can be sensitive to noise. The Sloughi is fairly tall, reaching up to 30 inches in height. However, they rarely exceed 70 pounds. They are very fast and agile. Their coat, like that of other Greyhounds, is short and fine, lying flat on the body. The coat appears in a variety of shades, including shades of brown and tan ranging from sand colored to charcoal, as well as reddish shades. A black mask is possible, as is black brindling or a black mantel. The head of the Sloughi is rather long and broad. The ears are rounded and hang down to the cheeks. They are quite slender, with long legs and a thin, curving tail. One of the oldest breeds, the Sloughi is believed to have originated in North Africa approximately eight to ten thousand years ago. Ancient peoples used these loyal and protective sighthounds for herding and guarding livestock, and for hunting. |
