The Volpino Italiano is truly an ancient breed. They are descendants of the European Spitz, as are many of today's common Spitz breeds. The Volpino Italiano, also known as the "Florentine Spitz" may be small in size but it is large in personality. These small dogs are fearless and make good watchdogs, as they do not care for intrusion by strangers. They are, however, devoted to their families. They are gregarious and playful dogs with a personality all their own. Their happy personalities are sure to be contagious among all who live with them. The Volpino Italiano is a large dog in a little package. Mature individuals measure between 10 and twelve inches, and normally do not exceed nine pounds in weight. Females tend to be smaller than males. They are commonly seen in white, though sable is also accepted. Sable Volpino Italianos are rare, however, and they may be difficult to find. Their long bushy coats and tails have hair that is straight and thick, and the tail curves over the body in typical Spitz-like manner. The hair should stand well off of the body. They have long muzzles and pyramid shaped heads. They have round, dark colored eyes that should reflect their alert and lively dispositions. They have prick triangular shaped ears that are set high and are close together. The rims of their eyelids are black, which can give them the appearance of eyeliner. They also have black noses. Originating in Italy, the Volpino Italiano has been breed for thousands of years. They have lived with the common people, as well as being idolized in the palaces of the rich. They were fancied both for their abilities as watchdogs and for their wonderful personalities. Some famous people have been associated with the Volpino Italiano, including Michelangelo. |
