Known for its gentle temperament and ease of riding, the Mountain Pleasure horse is a suitable horse for both novice and advanced riders.

The Mountain Pleasure horse is an extremely intelligent animal that is easy to train. It should also be known that in addition to being easy to train, the Mountain Pleasure Horse remembers what it has been taught, therefore making it a great horse for those who don't have a great deal of time to train an animal. Additionally, riding the Mountain Pleasure horse is enjoyable to ride, due to the horse's natural four-beat gait. The Mountain Pleasure horse is born with this gait, no action devices are needed, and in fact, action devices are forbidden to be used, in accordance with the Mountain Pleasure Horse Association guidelines.

One of the main requirements for the Mountain Pleasure Horse is that the horse has a four-beat gait. There are horses that are registered under both the Mountain Pleasure Horse Association and the Rocky Mountain Horse Association; however, there ARE differences between these horse breeds. Records show that the Mountain Pleasure Horse was used to start the Rocky Mountain Horse. When Mountain Pleasure Horses were bred, Old Tobe was considered to be one of the first Rocky Mountain horses. While there are color considerations in the Rocky Mountain Horse Association, (a dark, chocolate brown color is preferred), color is not a factor in the MPHA. Additionally, the Mountain Pleasure Horse is a little bit taller than the Rocky Mountain Horse.

The Mountain Pleasure Horse is a breed of horse that is about 160 years old and originated in the state of Kentucky. Many other horse breeds have come from the Mountain Pleasure Horse including the Tennessee Walking Horse, the American Saddlebred Horse and as mentioned above, the Rocky Mountain Horse. The Mountain Pleasure Horse was bred to be an easy-going, easy to ride horse that was suitable for riding and for farm work in the mountains of Kentucky. It is important to know that if one wishes to register a Mountain Pleasure Horse, both the parents of that horse must already be registered with the MPHA. The horse in question will also be blood-typed in order to prove its parentage. Additionally, because the gait of this horse is such an important quality of the breed, a videotape of the horses gait must be submitted to the Directors of the MPHA for approval before the horse can be registered with the association.
