Animal Description:

The Pixie Frog, also known as the "African Bullfrog," is a native of Sub-Saharan Africa and one of the largest frogs in the world.

Pixie Frogs are large and voracious eaters. In the wild and in captivity, they will be active both day and night. Since the males are quite large, they can often scare away predators, but when confronted, they can inflict a painful (though non-toxic) bite. Males are also known for their deep and throaty call, which can be heard at any time of day.

Male Pixies will typically reach a length of about 8 inches and females about 4 inches, though Pixies larger than 8 inches are not that uncommon. Their circumference varies by sex, some of them reaching up to 9 inches. Pixie Frogs are the largest frogs in Africa and the second largest breed in the world, second to the Goliath. Their skin color is green with orange on the front legs. Some will have a stripe along the back, and all have yellow ventral areas. Their heads and mouths are large, and all have appendages on their feet, which allow them to burrow and dig.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

Provide a large shallow water bowl for soaking. Keep the ambient daytime temperature around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and make sure there is a warmer area that remains between 85 to 90 degrees. At night the temperature should be lowered to between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity should be around 80%. Pixie Frogs are indiscriminate eaters and any animal housed with them that can fit into their mouths, including other Pixies, may be eaten. They should be fed a variety of insects such as crickets, mealworms, earthworms, and waxworms and can be fed mice and baby rats occasionally. Some may also eat feeder goldfish. Adult Pixies need only be fed about twice a week. Be careful not to overfeed or feed too many fatty items such as rodents, as these frogs are prone to gaining too much weight. Pixies may bite if they feel threatened or if they suspect that you are a food item. If you are going to handle the frog, approach it from behind to avoid threatening it.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Uncertain

Pixies will mate in pools, which are usually formed from excessive rains. Males will establish territories within the pools and begin their mating call. During copulation, males sit atop the females, covering their entire body with their own. As the female releases the eggs, the male fertilizes them. Fertilized eggs will hatch in a day or two. In the meantime, unlike most frog species, the male Pixie will guard the eggs from predators and other frogs. It takes approximately one month for these little tadpoles to reach metamorphosis. It is important to keep them separate at this point because Pixies are cannibalistic.
