The lovely Green Backed Frog is known by several names, all having to do with its habitat or color. These interesting frogs have pleasant voices and, with their incredible green shades of color, are very nice to look at as well. Green Backed Frogs are nocturnal and are often hidden beneath plants or other sheltering items during the day. In the wild, Green Backed Frogs are most often observed in rocky crevices near flowing or falling water. For this reason, they are also known as Cascade Frogs. At night, many males may chirp a single note. Because Green Backed Frogs secrete a rather toxic substance from their skin, you should wash your hands after you handle your frog and be sure not to touch your eyes or mouth. By maturity, Green Backed Frogs usually grow to about two inches in length. They range in color from brilliant shades of green, giving them the name Asian Emerald Backed Frog, to duller shades of brownish green. Most have duller green and brown stripes running down their sides. The noses of Green Backed Frogs are pointed. Found in areas around Hong Kong, Green Backed Frogs can be quite common in their native habitat, although it comprises only a small area. They are a common and rewarding pet, and may also be known as Asian Greenback Frogs. There are actually two subspecies of Green Backed Frog that are often mistaken for one another. The markings around the eyes distinguish one from the other. |
