Animal Description:

The lovely Green Backed Frog is known by several names, all having to do with its habitat or color. These interesting frogs have pleasant voices and, with their incredible green shades of color, are very nice to look at as well.

Green Backed Frogs are nocturnal and are often hidden beneath plants or other sheltering items during the day. In the wild, Green Backed Frogs are most often observed in rocky crevices near flowing or falling water. For this reason, they are also known as Cascade Frogs. At night, many males may chirp a single note. Because Green Backed Frogs secrete a rather toxic substance from their skin, you should wash your hands after you handle your frog and be sure not to touch your eyes or mouth.

By maturity, Green Backed Frogs usually grow to about two inches in length. They range in color from brilliant shades of green, giving them the name Asian Emerald Backed Frog, to duller shades of brownish green. Most have duller green and brown stripes running down their sides. The noses of Green Backed Frogs are pointed.

Found in areas around Hong Kong, Green Backed Frogs can be quite common in their native habitat, although it comprises only a small area. They are a common and rewarding pet, and may also be known as Asian Greenback Frogs. There are actually two subspecies of Green Backed Frog that are often mistaken for one another. The markings around the eyes distinguish one from the other.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

Usually, Green Backed Frogs should be kept in a vivarium that includes a water area comprising about a third to a half of the entire tank. Most Green Backed Frogs like running water, so you may wish to get a pump or filter. The water will need to be changed more frequently, if you do not have a filter. The land area may use potting soil and sand mix substrates or orchid bark. It is good to provide sturdy plants for climbing and hiding in. The temperature should be kept between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (about 21 and 24 degrees Celsius) with a nighttime temperature of about 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18.3 degrees Celsius). Small insects like crickets, moths, waxworms, and flies are an appropriate diet for Green Backed Frogs. The lid should be secured since Green Backed Frogs can climb.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Uncertain

Generally, Green Backed Frogs can be sexed vocally, because only males will call.
